Founded in 1992, the Missouri Smallmouth Alliance is a conservation oriented organization with primary focus on Smallmouth habitat and angling issues. We believe in putting something back into the resource while having a good time doing it. Anglers in the State of Missouri are blessed with some of the best Smallmouth habitat in the country. The Missouri Ozarks are home to thousands of miles of shoreline in its many spring fed rivers, streams, and deep cool lakes. However, Missouri's smallmouth fisheries are not without their problems. Spotted bass are invading many of our prime Smallmouth waters, especially those in the Meramec River basin. Not only is there a concern about the number of spots competing with the smallies, but hybridization of spots and smallmouths is also a problem. Since its inception, one of the MSA's primary goals has been promoting better regulations to improve smallmouth fishing quality. MSA surveys conducted over the past few years show that an overwhelming majority of Missouri smallmouth bass anglers also are clearly in favor of conservation-based regulations aimed at improving the quality of smallmouth fisheries. These anglers support reduced creel limits, increased minimum length limits, and/or catch-and-release areas on smallmouth streams. MSA is committed to doing its part to help create world-class smallmouth fishing in Missouri through additional regulations that have a proven record of producing quality fishing. From the very beginning, our membership has advocated working with the MDC to bring about such regulatory changes. Today, there are Special Smallmouth Bass Management Areas on several of Missouri's best smallmouth rivers. MSA's advocacy has and will play a key role in expanding these special management areas. Browse our web site and its many links; you'll find plenty of useful information geared to help you have a great Smallmouth experience. Read the articles on the Bronzeback Page on how and where to fish for Smallmouth in Missouri. You'll discover a treasure of tips and techniques. For detailed information on problems facing Missouri's smallmouth fisheries and what the MSA is trying to do about them then browse the Conservation Page. If you are a doubter, and need proof there are lunker Smallmouth Bass in Missouri's rivers and streams then check the Photo Gallery. After you finish studying our web site, and if you feel strongly in what The Smallmouth Alliance is doing, then go to the Membership Page, join our organization and get involved. Like smallmouth angling, The Smallmouth Alliance web site is in transition. More changes are planned for the site, but in the end this web site will only be as good as you help make it. Critique what you see, send us your photos, submit stories of your fishing adventures, tell us your concerns and smallmouth.org will become a web site you'll return to often.
